Bauxite Quality Benchmarks: How Gilgit-Baltistan Ore Stacks Up Against Guinea, Australia and Indonesia
A refinery buyer in Shandong asked me last month what our available alumina was on a wet-screened composite. 48.2%. Reactive silica came back at 3.1%. He went quiet for a moment, then asked how many tonnes we could commit to annually.
That's the conversation I want to have with more people. Because when overseas alumina buyers hear "Pakistan bauxite," the reaction is usually a polite nod and then a comparison to Guinea. Which is fair. Guinea is the benchmark. But the comparison deserves more nuance than it usually gets.
So let me lay out how Gilgit-Baltistan ore actually measures against the four sources that dominate seaborne bauxite trade — Guinea (CBG and GAC), Australian Weipa, Indonesian ore out of Sulawesi and Kalimantan, and to a lesser extent Jamaican gibbsitic material.
What the Bayer process actually cares about
Refinery metallurgists don't buy on total alumina. They buy on available alumina at a given digestion temperature, and they punish reactive silica hard. Every 1% of reactive SiO₂ in the feed consumes roughly 1.2 kg of caustic soda per tonne of alumina produced, and it drags iron and titanium into the red mud. That's the whole game.
Here's the rough benchmark table I keep in my head when I'm talking to refinery guys:
- Guinea CBG (Boké): 47–51% available Al₂O₃, 1.5–2.5% reactive SiO₂, largely gibbsitic. Low-temp digestion. The reason CBG sets the global reference price.
- Guinea GAC / Sangaredi: 48–52% Al₂O₃, silica often under 2%. Arguably the best seaborne ore in the world.
- Weipa (Rio Tinto, Queensland): 49–53% Al₂O₃, but higher boehmite fraction, so buyers with only low-temp Bayer circuits discount it.
- Indonesian ore (Bintan, Sulawesi): 44–49% Al₂O₃, reactive silica frequently 3.5–5%. Cheaper landed price but the caustic penalty is real. And after the 2023 export ban, most of it's gone to domestic refineries anyway.
- Jamaica: gibbsitic, ~48% Al₂O₃, but high iron and the industry there is contracting.
Now Gilgit-Baltistan.
What we're seeing on GB bauxite
Our concessions in the karst horizons overlying the Cambrian carbonates — particularly the belts running through Skardu district and toward the Chilas side — give us bauxite that's predominantly gibbsitic with a boehmite fraction I'd put at 15–20% based on the XRD work we've had done in Islamabad and cross-checked in a Chinese lab last year.
Composite grab and channel samples across three of our sixteen blocks are running:
- Total Al₂O₃: 46 to 52%, with a working average around 48.5%
- Available Al₂O₃ (145°C digestion): 44 to 48%
- Reactive SiO₂: 2.8 to 4.2% — this is our weak point and I won't pretend otherwise
- Fe₂O₃: 8 to 14% (moderate, workable)
- TiO₂: 2.5 to 3.5%
- LOI: 24 to 27%
Honestly? On alumina content alone we sit above Indonesian ore and inside the range of Guinea CBG. On reactive silica we're worse than Guinea and roughly comparable to average Indonesian material. That's the honest picture and I'd rather a Chinese or Emirati buyer hear it from me than find it in a third-party assay after signing.
I'll add something I got wrong in our first year. I used to think our total alumina number was the selling point. It isn't. Refinery buyers in Shandong and Bahrain don't care about a headline 51% if they're going to eat a caustic penalty on the silica. What sold that Shandong contact wasn't the 48.2% — it was that we'd already run beneficiation trials showing we could pull reactive silica down to around 2.4% with wet screening and a light attrition scrub. That changed the conversation entirely.
Where GB actually wins, and where it doesn't
Look, we're not going to displace Guinea for the seaborne majors. CBG can put 40 million tonnes a year on a ship. We can't. What GB bauxite offers is something narrower and, for the right buyer, more useful.
Where we win:
Proximity to the Chinese refinery cluster. Bauxite from Karachi to Qingdao is a shorter haul than from Kamsar, and if the Khunjerab overland route gets the upgrade the CPEC plans keep promising, some tonnage moves overland into Xinjiang. Not tomorrow. But it's on the horizon.
Gibbsite dominance means low-temperature Bayer digestion works, which matters for older refineries in the Gulf and South Asia that don't want the energy bill of a high-temp circuit built for Weipa-style boehmitic ore.
Political simplicity. One country, one licensing regime, provincial mineral rules under the GB government that a serious JV partner can actually work with. Guinea has been a difficult jurisdiction for the past 18 months and everyone in the trade knows it.
Where we don't win:
Scale. Our combined JORC-equivalent inferred resource across the bauxite-bearing blocks is in the low tens of millions of tonnes based on current mapping. That's a mid-tier position, not a Guinea-killer.
Reactive silica, as I said. It's a real cost for the refiner and it needs beneficiation or blending to be competitive on a landed-caustic-adjusted basis.
What a serious buyer should ask for
If you're a refinery procurement head or a trader working alumina books, the questions worth putting to us — or to anyone selling Pakistani bauxite — are these:
Available alumina at your actual digestion temperature, not just total Al₂O₃. Reactive silica by the Bayer bomb method, not just total SiO₂. Boehmite-to-gibbsite ratio from XRD. Moisture on shipped basis (our monsoon-affected stockpiles run 12–15% moisture and you need to price that in). And a beneficiation flowsheet if the raw silica number is above 3%.
We'll send composites. We've done it for a Turkish group and two Chinese trading houses this year already. The Turks came back and asked about a 200,000 tonne annual off-take. That conversation's still live.
The bigger point — and I'll stop here because I've got a call with a Karachi freight forwarder in ten minutes — is that the bauxite market isn't a single benchmark game anymore. Guinea sets the reference. But refiners are quietly diversifying, especially the Chinese ones burned by the Indonesian ban and nervous about West African logistics. Pakistan isn't the answer to that on its own. It's part of a mix. And for a certain kind of buyer, with a certain kind of Bayer circuit, our numbers work.
